The back-end of the fuel cycle for the High Temperature Reactor (HTR) is discussed. The volume and the activity of waste (i.e. the spent fuel elements) produced are calculated. The reprocessing of HTR fuel and the possibilities for waste reduction are discussed. The 14C that is produced by a HTR is evaluated and compared with other reactor types. Finally, a comparison of the radiological consequences for direct disposal of HTR waste versus reprocessed LWR waste is made. 4 figs., 7 tabs., 6 refs., 2 appendices
