CONTAMINATION OF SUBSOIL AT DHRUVA - CIRUS COMPLEX

Excavation work was in progress to locate the leaky spot in the sea water line. During this time when water annular sump of CIRUS was being pumped out, water was seen coming in the excavation pit. Work was suspended. Water sample analysis showed activity of 40 Bq/ml and radiation of excavated soil dug from the bottom showed a field of 50-200 mR/hr. The contaminated soil was transported to solid waste management facility. The total activity in the excavated soil was estimated to be 1.7 x 10E12 Bq of Cs-137. This event was rated at Level 1 on INES as per the revised users manual part III section 5.2, as this event was the result of inadequate procedures.
