REACTOR SAFETY: DIFFERENT TYPES, NEW TYPES 1. Introduction The purpose of this contribution is to describe the status of the debate on nuclear safety anno 1991. To this end section 2 gives an overview over the most common type of nuclear reactors. In section 3 the issue of nuclear safety is addressed. The experience from the past is described in general terms. The present issues are also discussed. The state of the art of the PSA technique is given. Recent developments in reactor technology form the last part of this section. In order to assess the implications of the internationally formulated design requirements an example of the risk assessment for a newly planned power station is given in section 4. This paper ends with a number of conclusions regarding nuclear safety.
