INTRODUCTION

In the aftermath of Chernobyl Greenpeace has inevitably received many requests
from the public asking where they can buy radiation monitoring equipment. This
booklet has been produced in response to this demand.

The most important thing it does is to list some UK manufacturers of suitable
equipment; to describe this equipment and to cost it. It also explains what each item
of equipment will do and, of equal importance, what it will not do. This information
has been summarised from manufacturers' own catalogues; so its inclusion here
naturally does not imply any warranty on the part of Greenpeace as to its suitability.

The booklet does, however, tell you where to go for what and will help in estimating
what a given programme is liable to cost. As regards programme-selection, we have
for the most part concentrated on equipment at the cheaper end of the market.
Intending users should direct further enquiries to the manufacturers they select
from this guidebook.

It should also be noted that Chernobyl has naturally stimulated the design of
other monitoring equipment and it is to be expected that several new designs
will become available during the next few years.

Finally, since the science of radiation protection is a complex one and monitoring
techniques can be misleading, a brief introduction to the whole subject is given as
well as a short booklist for further study.
