Preface EIGHT DAYS after the first atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan surrendered. Not only was World War II at an end, but the world was on the threshold of a new age, the Era of Atomic Energy. Two questions are in the minds of everyone. What is atomic energy? What does it mean for the future of America and the world? In this book I have sought to answer these questions in nontechnical language which the layman can understand. Chapter I is a preview of some of the things which may be expected in the coming Era of Atomic Energy. It seeks to evaluate the impact of this new source of power on industry, transportation, and life in general. Chapters II to VII give the background of atomic theory without which the reader cannot hope to understand recent events. They tell the fascinating story of how these theories took shape. Chapters VIII to XI recount the experiments in atom smashing which led to the atomic bomb. Einstein's equation for the conversion of matter into energy, the pioneer atom smashing experiments of Lord Rutherford and his colleagues, the building of the giant atom smashers, and the exciting discovery of Uranium 235 are discussed in them. Chapter XII tells the story of how the atomic bomb was developed during the war years by marshalling the nation's leading scientists and providing a budget of $2,000,000,000 for the project. This chapter is based on President Truman's statement and on releases made public by the War Department.
