PREFACE.

Deprived of scientific contact with the world, enclosed within the frontiers of the
country, fighting with the weapons of word and spirit, which could not be withheld,
knowing that the incarnate evil could not be perpetuated and trusting that liberation
from the oppression, which endeavoured, albeit in vain, to discourage the spirit and
to prostrate the body, would come, so the Dutch people lived during the years of
the war.Though servants fell, service continued. Scientific workers carried out
their tasks as long and as well as possible, searching for Truth, serving Science
and Humanity.
This book was planned on account of the difficulty of procuring, reading and
studying papers on chemical subjects, published by our countrymen during the
years 1940-1945. Its publication has been fraught with great difficulties and
arising from particular, in part evil, circumstances in our country, the printing
has been delayed.
It contains reviews of the special sections of chemical research, mentioned in the
contents, and it is hoped that it may be a guide to facilitate orientation of the work
done on pure and applied chemistry and the consultation of the original papers.
The "Nederlandsche Chemische Vereeniging" (1) by taking the initiative for this
publication, hopes to contribute, in this way, towards the restoration of the
temporarily broken contact with the research workers, their laboratories and
societies abroad, which existed before the war.

Dec. 1946.

President.
