FOREWORD This World Survey of atomic industry has a limited but important purpose: It is to demonstrate that industrial uses of atomic energy are already emerging as a practical reality in many parts of the world. The atomic energy revolution of which so much has been said for so long is in fact well underway and this volume shows how and where, and identifies some of the unprecedented problems encountered in putting the atom to practical social use. Hopefully the Survey will help reveal to government officials and business leaders throughout the world the potential of atomic energy for their own countries and give them a better feel for the kinds of problems they will have to resolve to make use of atomic energy. Perhaps some readers of the Survey may even be led by what they read here to investigate concrete possibilities and to make a start on the long series of decisions necessary to the accomplishment of important atomic energy projects. The Atomic Industrial Forum stands ready to assist any interested persons with additional information or other help within its resources. In any case, we hope, and indeed we are confident, that the Survey will perform a useful service in enlarging understanding of the practical uses of atomic energy and of the extent of its development around the world up to this time. FRANCIS K. McCune, President Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc. New York, September 1, 1960
