Last year, the Dutch Province of Limburg started an alliance in which, besides the local government, research institutes, small nuclear reactor (SMR) developers, utilities, industrial customers and funders cooperated. With this "Limburg SMR alliance" Limburg tried to lead the way towards an SMR in Limburg. The preferred site for a first SMR would be Chemelot, a chemical industry cluster near Geleen. Chemelot's director was also in favor, initially. Last month, however, a report from the alliance revealed that Chemelot had abandoned its ambition for a small nuclear reactor: "Chemelot realised that it is undesirable as a location due to the mutual risks of chemical plants, combined with the safety requirements of an SMR." In debatten over de mogelijkheden die kleine modulaire kernreactoren (SMR's) zouden kunnen bieden voor onze energievoorziening wordt veelvuldig verwezen naar de ontwikkeling in Amerika van een kleine reactor sinds 2012 door het (nieuwe) bedrijf Nuscale. De eerste toepassing van deze reactor zou in een nieuw te bouwen kerncentrale in Idaho (USA) plaatsvinden. De plannen hiervoor bestaan sinds 2015. Destijds werd verwacht dat de kerncentrale in 2023 zou kunnen gaan draaien.
De geschatte bouwkosten van de kerncentrale zijn in de loop van de tijd sterk opgelopen, van 5 tot 6 duizend dollar per kW(el) in 2015 naar zo'n 20.000 dollar per kW(el) in 2023. Lees verder →
