From the publication:
Marketing Urenco has won significant new business in several countries during the past year. The Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) operates some 8000MW of nuclear power in England and Wales, 3000MW of which comes from Magnox reactors using natural uranium fuel and the balance from Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors (AGRs). Urenco has been supplying most of the enrichment since 1980. Late in 1985 Urenco and the CEGB concluded a further major contract which will furnish much of its enrichment needs after existing contracts are completed. Under the new contract uranium discharged from Magnox reactors will be recycled for use in the AGRs. In the spring of 1986 a new contract was awarded to Urenco by South of Scotland Electricity Board (SSEB). This contract provides for further deliveries following the completion of the current contracts which cover most of the utility's present enrichment requirements. Under the new contract, Urenco will be supplying all the enrichment required for the fuelling of SSEB's AGR reactors, which are located at Hunterston and Torness. The new contract with SSEB, like that with the CEGB, will involve the enrichment of uranium recycled from the Magnox reactors. These two customers will thus be completing the nuclear fuel cycle on a routine basis. The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority contracted with Urenco for the enrichment requirements of its Steam Generating Heavy Water Reactor at Winfrith in Dorset. This contract covers the remaining life of the reactor. Following its success last year in securing sizeable contracts in Sweden with Vattenfall (Swedish State Power Board) and OKG. Urenco has continued to expand its business outside its three countries with further business in Switzerland. Urenco signed its first contract with Nordostschweizerische Kraftwerke AG (NOK) of Baden in Switzerland in 1981 for the fuelling of its Beznau 2 reactor. During the year they concluded a major addition to the contract to cover the Beznau 1 reactor as well, thus doubling the volume of Urenco's supplies to NOK. By 1988 Urenco will be supplying around one-third of the enrichment requirements of Sweden and Switzerland. The USA is a major area of activity for Urenco and marketing efforts there have been conducted since early 1985 by Urenco Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Urenco Ltd, based in Washington DC. Urenco now holds two long-term enrichment contracts in the USA, with Boston Edison Company and with Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD); the marketing effort continues together with preparations for handling deliveries to the present customers. Urenco is thus establishing itself firmly in the United States, a market that had hitherto been dominated by the US DOE. Overall, Urenco has added new business to its order book, thus increasing its share of world business during a period in which the market has remained static. The value of Urenco's forward deliveries expressed in a single currency depends on exchange rates but is currently about £2,500 million.
