In 1986 nuclear-generated electric power greatly increased and coal generation
decreased. Thus, the nuclear output represented 70 % of the French total output
against 65 % in 1985. This increase was due to two factors: the excellent and
constant availability of the nuclear power plants and the start-up of new units.

Indeed, the 900 MW PWR units have proved to be satisfactorily available for the
third year in a row. Energy availability rose to 83% in 1986. Several extensive
maintenance operations, particularly those involving the shot peening of steam
generator tubes, were carried out during annual outages. All this demonstrates
how efficiently the resources have been organized and handled.

The first six 1 300 MW PWR units have also been operating to satisfaction, with an
energy availability of 65 %. It is to be noted that regulatory shutdowns for complete
inspection after the first duty cycle have counted for a great deal in this availability.
In fact, outside of the scheduled shutdowns, the availability of these units rose to
90 % during the year. This new unit type undoubtedly benefits from the experience
acquired through 900 MW PWRs.

The number of nuclear power plants was increased by six new units in 1986: one
900 MW, four 1 300 MW, and one 1 200 MW. This last plant, Creys-Malville, built
on the basis of European cooperation, belongs to the fast neutron breeder reactor
type. Power escalation tests carried out during the year did not reveal any major
problem. Creys-Malville reached full power on December 9, 1986 and is thus the
most powerful plant of its kind in the world today.
