INTRODUCTION On 13 May 1996, the French government authorised the French National Agency for Radioactive Waste Management to submit three Implementation and Operation Approval Applications (Demande d'Autorisation d'Installation et d'Exploitation - DAIE) for underground research laboratories on sites located in the departments of the Gard and the Vienne, and in Eastern France, respectively. This decision is part of a step-by-step process defined by the Act of 30 December 1991 and will involve a year-long series of prerequisite administrative procedures before the implementation of these laboratories.
