From the publication:
The French National Radioactive Waste Management Agency (ANDRA) Created in 1979, the ANDRA (Agence nationale pour la gestion des déchets radioactifs) ensures the long-term protection of man and of his environment at all stages of radioactive waste management. To this end, it fulfils three roles described in the Law of 30 December 1991. An Industrial Role The ANDRA defines the specifications for the packaging and disposal of radioactive waste, and manages in its two surface disposal facilities 90% of all radioactive waste generated in France; the waste processed consists exclusively of short-lived, low-level and medium-level waste. The ANDRA does not import foreign radioactive waste in strict accordance with the law. A Research Role The ANDRA is responsible for studying the possibility of reversible or irreversible disposal of long-lived high-level radioactive waste in deep geological formations, notably by setting up underground research laboratories. An Information Role In 1992, the ANDRA set up the National Observatory of Radioactive Waste o register and locate all radioactive waste existing throughout France. Since 1993, the Observatory has been preparing and publishing an annual inventory of which several thousand copies are distributed. Tile ANDRA is folded by tile waste generators according to the amount of waste they generate, and not by tile State budget (taxes).
