WORKING IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST

ANDRA's objective is to guarantee safety for all the phases of radioactive waste
management. In order to do this, the Agency has taken on three fundamental roles:

• An industrial role:
By taking advantage of the 25 years of experience acquired at the Manche Disposal
Facility, ANDRA has been able to develop and set up operational disposal techniques
to take care of 90% of the radioactive waste produced in France. This disposal
facility, operating from 1969 to 1994 has now been taken over by the Aube Disposal
Facility. This new facility, which has been in operation since January 13, 1992,
disposes of low and medium-level short-lived radioactive waste, produced in France
by electricity production, research, industry and medicine.

• A research role:
For the management of long-lived and high-level radioactive waste, ANDRA was put
in charge (through the French legislation of December 30, 1991) of a research
program to set up geological research laboratories in order to study possible deep
disposal facilities.

• A role for information:
In 1991, ANDRA set up the National Observatory of Radioactive Waste in order to
update the inventory and the location of radioactive waste known to exist in France.
This inventory is an essential tool for records on radioactive waste to be organized
and kept correctly.
