From the publication:
Preamble A safe industrial tool for the next 50 years Since January 1992, the Centre de l'Aube Disposal Facility is responsible for the disposal of 90% of all radioactive waste generated in France. The waste processed consists of short-lived, low-level and intermediate-level waste. In 1997, some 16,000 m3 of waste were disposed of in the facility which could accommodate a total capacity of 1 million m3. With its 100,000th package disposed of in September 1997, its 100,000th metal drum compacted in December 1997 and its 33 closed disposal units since 1992, the Centre can certainly be recognised for its industrial know-how. Preserved environmental and personnel safety Water and air control, as well as regular plant and milk sampling, show that the operation of the Centre did not have any impact on its personnel and the environment. These results were confirmed by comparative analyses carried out on the environment (particularly the food chain) around the Centre by an independent laboratory at the request of the local Information Commission (CU). A permanent actor on the local scene As soon as it settled in the Aube department, the ANDRA introduced a specific policy to inform the region's population and elected officials. In 1997, the Centre pursued this policy and asserted its economical, cultural and sport role in the local and regional life.
