From the publication:
Foreword Eurochemic, the European Company for the Chemical Processing of Irradiated Fuels, is a joint undertaking of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA). The Company, which has its seat in Mol, Belgium, takes the form of a joint stock company. It was established by thirteen NEA member countries according to the Statutes annexed to the Convention on the Constitution of Eurochemic which was signed on December 20, 1957 and came into force on July 27, 1959. At the end of 1980, Governments, public institutions or enterprises of the following eleven countries were shareholders of Eurochemic: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. The Governments of the Netherlands and of Turkey withdrew from the Company in 1975 and 1978, respectively. The original aims of the Company were to carry out research and industrial activities connected with the chemical processing of irradiated fuels, the use of products resulting therefrom, and to contribute to the training of specialists in these fields. The works of the Company relating to these objectives have been described in the Activity Reports up to 1974. After eight years of operation, the reprocessing plant was shut down at the end of 1974, following a decision of the Board of Directors adopted in November, 1971. With the view to fulfilling its legal obligations regarding the conditioning and interim storage of the radioactive wastes resulting from the operation of the reprocessing plant and from its decontamination, the Company carried out, since 1975, a technical programme. To enable the execution of this programme, the Company's duration, originally fixed at fifteen years, was extended to July 27, 1979.
