The Finnish nuclear power plants at Olkiluoto and Loviisa have operated since the late 1970's. The two nuclear power reactors of Teollisuuden Voima Oy (TVO) at Olkiluoto in Eurajoki and the two nuclear reactors owned by Imatran Voima Oy (IVO) on the island of Hästholmen at Loviisa generate together almost one third of the electricity consumed in Finland. Part of the uranium fuel, from which radioactive and radiating spent fuel is accumulated, is annually changed for fresh fuel. During the life-time of the Loviisa and Olkiluoto power plant units, some 70 tonnes of this kind of highly-radioactive nuclear waste is generated per one year.
