From the publication:
INTRODUCTION The Catalonia Antinuclear Committee (CANC) was founded on April 14th, 1977, by the meeting of several people concerned about problems originated by every step of nuclear energy cycle and the kind of society it involves. In order to collaborate in making a strong and coherent resistance to the –since then all powerful plans of interested companies, it was considered to be of first priority to inform, to mobilize and to organize all the people who had nothing to gain and much to lose in the nuclearization of the country. Nuclear choice is marketed as an option which makes people dream in energy self- sufficiency. Although there are some steps in nuclear fuel cycle that keep off any self-sufficiency (enrichment for instance), it is not possible to support an argumentation like that if there is no uranium, the first step in the nuclear cycle. So, be cause its economic significance to companies, an ambitious plan was started in order to evaluate the reserves of that mineral in Spain, as well as its exploitation cost With this plan, more than fifty per cent of Catalonia land has been included in a reserved area for radioactive minerals survey. About 570 Catalan villages are now under prospection menace with the possibility of opening uranium mines everywhere, depending of ore characteristics, technological development and uranium price in the international market. And all in line with a complex conspiration of international relations organized to determine exactly world uranium resources, its existences and exploitation costs. In 1974 it was published the National Uranium Exploitation and Survey Plan (Plan Nacional de Exploración e Investigación del Uranio) covering ten years, from 1975 to 1985. It was completed by the National Raw Materials and Minerals Provision Plan (Plan Nacional de Abastecimiento de Materias Primas y Minerales).
