How to use this handbook

This Chernobyl Handbook is a contribution by the Swiss Agency for Development
and Cooperation (SDC) to the 2oth anniversary of the nuclear power plant disaster.
The texts and pictures in this reference book are based on the results of ongoing
research work. These results have been regularly published on the Internet platform
www.chernoby.info since 2002. The platform allows all interested parties to state
their opinion on the published content. Additions and updates are made on an
ongoing basis. The Handbook reflects the status as of October 2005.
The ample sources are as a rule not included in the Handbook, but can be found at
www.chernobyl.info. The same applies to most of the Internet links, addresses of
organisations and projects, and statements of opinion that appear regularly on the
discussion forum at www.chernobyl.info. Such information is subject to frequent
change, which is why it is made available in electronic form only.
Abbreviations regularly used in this handbook are explained in the list of
abbreviations. The glossary gives definitions of the most important terms,
which are printed in Italics in the text.
