Introduction

The disaster in reactor 4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant on April 26, 1986,
has been called one of the the largest industrial disasters in history.

Ten years on, the consequences of this disaster are slowly becoming visible.
Millions of people are facing the consequences of the accident and do this on a
day by day basis. Hundreds of thousands of people are still unable to return to
their former homes.

Over the past years a considerable quantity of new research has been produced by
national and international agencies on the consequences of Chernobyl. We have tried
to review and verify this material in an attempt to clarify the present situation.
This is not an easy task as much of the material is contradictory or lacks sufficient
explanations of the findings. However, despite all the confusion, it is clear that the
accident has caused human suffering on a monumental scale and changed the lives
of millions of people. This report is based on more than 75 reports in the available
scientific literature and reviews the consequences which have come to light until now.
