DATA ON CAESIUM-137 ANP STRONTIUM-90 CONTAMINATION OF POPULATED AREAS IN 
THE BYELORUSSIAN SSR

(As of June 1989)

FOREWORD

This leaflet presents data on caesium-137 and strontium-90 contamination of 
populated areas in the Byelorussian SSR as of June 1989. Data provided by the USSR 
State Committee on Hydrometeorology (and the Byelorussian Committee on 
Hydrometeorology), the USSR (and BSSR) Ministry of Health, the Academy of 
Sciences of the USSR (and the BSSR), the BSSR State Agro-industrial Committee, 
and a series of other organizations were used in the preparation of these values. The 
USSR State Committee on Hydrometeorology is the leading organization in this area. 
Therefore, figures are given for all the data available from the USSR State Committee 
on Hydrometeorology; these data were used in the drawing up of the area 
contamination maps sanctioned by the Interdepartmental Commission of the USSR 
State Committee on Hydrometeorology.

The averaged values given in the leaflet are, on the whole, based on a large number 
of samples (the number of samples is indicated). These figures should be used to 
calculate full lifetime irradiation doses, as it is precisely here that averaged values 
are required.

It should be borne in mind that the contamination densities at various points in these 
areas are higher or lower than the mean values. These points are shown on the more 
detailed maps of individual populated areas and this material should be used to 
ensure that areas with high contamination levels and hot-spots are efficiently 
decontaminated.

The leaflet lists all populated areas with caesium-137 contamination levels of 
5 Ci/km2 and above, and all those where the strontium-90 levels are 1 Ci/km2 and 
above. A list of villages where the contamination levels are lower than the average 
is also given, but the measurements of below-average levels are still in progress 
and some villages have therefore not been included. This leaflet is the first freely 
available compilation of data on radioactive contamination of villages and 
owns in the BSSR.

We propose to issue a leaflet with a more detailed set of data at a later point.

ПРЕДИСЛОВИЕ

В настоJПЦей брошюре представпены данные по заrр•знен1rю территории
насепенных nунктов Белорусской ССР цезнем-137 и стронцием-90 по данным 
на июнь 1989 года. При подготовке представпсиных значений использованы 
данные Госкомrидромета СССР (и БелГидромета), Мниздрава СССР (и БССР), 
АН СССР (и АН БССР), Госаrропрома БССР и рца друrих организаций. 
Головни организаци• - Госкомrидромет СССР. Таким образом, цифры 
приводRТСJI по всем имеющиме~~ в Госкомrидромете СССР данным, на 
основании которых были ttостроены карты заrр•знени~~ территории, 
утвержденные Межведомственной комиссией при Госкомrидромете СССР.
В брошюре привошrrся цифры, осредкенные, как правило, по большому чисnу 
проб (uсло проб указано). Эти цифр.ы должны пспользоватьс• дn11 расчетов доз 
за период всей жизни - именно в этом сnучае нужны осредненные данные.
Однако сnедует иметь в виду, что на территории насепенных пунктов имеютс•
точки, rде плотиость заrрязнени~~ больше или меньше средних значений - они 
нанесены иа более детальных картах отдельных населенных пунктов и должны 
использоваться дnJI эффективной дезактивации точек с повышенным 
заrраэнением и "rорJЩИХ., точек.
Следует отметить, что в брошюре приведсны все населенные пункты, rде 
уровень загрязненка достигает S и более Кюри/км2 по цезию-137 и 1 и более 
Кюри!км2 no строицию-90. В брошюре приведены также села и с меньшими 
заrрснениJIМИ, ио работы по измерению уровней, меньше указанных, еще 
продолжаюте~~, н отдельные села в эту брошюру не попали. Издаваемо 
брошюра представл•ет собой первую открытую сводку данных по 
радиоактивному эаrрснению сел и городов БССР.
В дальнейшем предполаrаетСJI издание брошюры с еще более nодробным
представленнем данных.
