International Commitment

In October 1989 the government of the then USSR formally requested the IAEA to
carry out an international experts' assessment of the environmental and health
situation of people living in regions contaminated by radioactive material from the
Chernobyl accident. Since the main purpose of this project was the protection of
people still living in the contaminated areas the assessment was to exclude people
who had been evacuated to uncontaminated areas, and the so-called "liquidators"
(decontamination workers).
