ENERGY DEVELOPMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION IN UKRAINE

Ukraine as a newly formed European state with its population (52 mio people) and
territory (603 thou sq. km) takes second place in Europe. Special attention should
be paid to the fact that. Ukraine proclaimed its intention to become a nuclear-free
nation and to remove tactical nuclear weapons from its territory in 1992 and up to
1994 eliminate strategic nuclear weapons.

Ukraine have a hard heritage. Like other independent countries of the former
Soviet Union, Ukraine is in the period of a deep financial and economic crisis now,
its territory has been proclaimed as an area of environmental disaster.

As a result of extensive and irrational development of industry, energy, agriculture
Ukraine became one of the most environmentally polluted area in the world.

The territory is oversaturated with mining, coal, metallurgy, chemistry industries,
power facilities with old technologies.

Power engineering has become one of the main factors in terms of environmental
pollution. Total capacity of power stations (66,7%) - 13.8 mio kw, nuclear power
plants (24,8%), 4.7 mio kw hydropower stations (8.5%), 298,5 billion kwh of electric
power were generated in 1990 and in 1991 there was a decrease in electric power
production 14 large thermo power stations with the capacity from 500 to 3.600 kw
generate the bulk of electric power.
