From the publication:
INTRODUCTION 1987 marks the Fortieth Anniversary of Albuquerque Operations Office. After World War 11 ended, the Atomic Energy Act of 1946 created the Atomic Energy Commission, which assumed control of the nation's atomic energy program on January 1, 1947. The mission of nuclear weapons research, development, testing, production, and storage was assigned to a new Office of Santa Fe Directed Operations located in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The agency assumed direct field operation of the weapons program on July 2, 1947, when the first civilian manager was appointed. The name was later changed to Santa Fe Operations, and the main office moved to Albuquerque in 1951 on the site of a former girls' school, now the Kirtland AFB West Officers' Club. In April 1956 the office was renamed Albuquerque Operations, and in 1958 the headquarters was moved into a group of surplus barracks buildings on Sandia Base, now Kirtland AFB East, its current location. Albuquerque Operations Office's primary responsibility continues to be the development and production of nuclear weapons, although technical, organizational, and political changes through the years have added many exciting new dimensions to our basic mission. It is with great pride we celebrate "Four Decades of Excellence"-- 1947 to 1987. R. G. Romatowski Manager
