Introduction A long journey began in July of 1986 when the author was selected to serve on the Hanford Health Effects Panel to evaluate whether or not health effects credibly occurred and whether new systems were necessary to detect potential health effects from the Hanford Nuclear Reservation's historic radioactive releases. Iodine-131 (1-131) was recognized as a radioactive component of the historic releases which could have caused health effects in the Hanford work force and in downwind populations shortly after the classified documents on many of the historic Hanford radioactive releases (1944-56) were made public in February of 1986. At the Hanford Health Effects Panel meeting. (1) September 22-26, 1986, each of the panel members, scientists from various parts of the country, was asked if he/she thought whether a recent public statement by the Manager of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, Mr. Mike Lawrence, was scientifically founded. Mr. Lawrence's statement was basically that "There were no observable health effects from Hanford's historic radioactive releases." Because the iodine-131 releases were of such a size that health effects were credible, because considerable data on the iodine-131 releases were available, because no other independent scientists that the author knew of were pursuing this subject, and because of Mr. Lawrence's claim (repeated in the April 12, 1987, CBS West 57th Street Newsmagazine program), the author decided to try and rationally evaluate whether it is reasonable to conclude that there are observable health effects to downwinders from the publicly known historic Hanford Nuclear Reservation iodine-131 releases. This book, over two years later, is the result. References (1).
