ABOUT THIS BOOKLET

THE ENERGY BOOKLET is designed to provide students and citizens with a brief,
readable Introduction to one side of the energy debate In Ontario. The booklet
offers a direct challenge to Ontario's commitment to continued reliance on
non-renewable energy sources-particularly nuclear power-and points towards
the alternatives, including serious conservation measures and the development
of renewable energy sources.
Although nuclear now supplies only five per cent of Ontario's energy consumption,
we have devoted half of the booklet to a discussion of its defects. This is because
nuclear continues to receive the lion's share of funds devoted to energy research and
development in Ontario, and because the current government of Ontario has made
very clear its commitment to an expanded role for nuclear-generated electricity in
the province's energy future.
We believe that nuclear power is neither necessary nor desirable, and that it poses
environmental, economic, and social threats. We also believe that government
policies designed to support the continuing emphasis on this and other large-scale,
centralized energy technologies impede progress toward a safe, sane energy future
based on conservation and renewables.

Nothing in this booklet is original. Its contents have been assembled from the
work of dozens of people, particularly the contributors to the Birch Bark Alliance
(a quarterly"voice of nuclear concern"), and the Energy Probe crew. Jan Marmorek's
'Over a Barrel', and the CANDU? Monograph by Glen Wood and Donald Blair also
proved very useful.
Responsibility for errors and omissions remain with the author.
The ENERGY BOOKLET has been published by the Birch Bark Alliance, with
assistance from the Ontario Public Interest Research Group (Peterborough chapter).
