Environmental Action Plan by The Japanese Electric Utility Industry

14 September, 2000
The Federation of Electric Power Companies/Japan

Introduction

The Japanese electric utility industry has recognized environmental protection as
its social responsibility, and has actively undertaken measures. Today, our society
faces many serious environmental issues requiring diverse and complex measures.
These include measures to mitigate global warming, recycling, waste prevention
measures aimed at building a recycle-based society, and management of chemical
substances.
Environmental protection is one of our top management priorities, and the electric
utility industry intends to step up our effort to tackle the problem voluntarily and
actively, with an overall commitment to a stable electricity supply. To achieve this
objective, the Federation* announced its Environmental Action Plan by the Japanese
Electric Utility Industry on 27 November, 1996. The Federation reviews the plan
annually to ensure the transparency of the Action Plan and its achievement. The
second review was completed in September 1999. This is its third review.
