SUMMARY

At first sight nuclear power would appear to offer an obvious solution to the global
warming caused by the emission of anthropogenic greenhouse gases. It provides
power in bulk and by means of the fast reactor, deriving its energy from reprocessed
and therefore recycled fuel, would appear to have a long term future. Yet, many
uncertainties remain, including the cost relative to other power-generating systems.
Thus, having given the go-ahead first to the construction of a PWR at Sizewell and
then at Hinkley Point, the UK government is waiting until 1994 for a review of its
nuclear policy before committing itself to a future programme. Here, the cost of
nuclear power has clearly played a big role in the government's hesitation. Indeed,
the intention of getting private industry to take over Britain's nuclear reactors at
the same time as the rest of the electricity supply system was foiled when the real
price of nuclear-generated electricity was revealed in the late 1980s and was found
to be nearly double that indicated by the Central Electricity generating Board at
the Hinkley Point C public inquiry …
