MILL TAILINGS MANAGEMENT

Facilities for the disposal of uranium mill tailings will invariably be subjected 
to geomorphological and climatological influences in the long-term. Proceedings of 
a workshop discuss how the principles of geomorphology can be applied to the 
siting, design, construction, decommissioning and rehabilitation of disposal 
facilities in order to provide for long-term containment and stability of tailings. 
The characteristics of tailings and their behaviour after disposal influence the 
potential impacts which might occur in the long-term. Proceedings of another 
workshop examine the technologies for uranium ore processing and tailings 
conditioning with a view to identifying improvements that could be made in 
such characteristics.

DU JUREMENT DE L'URANIUM

Les installations conçues pour l'évacuation des résidus de traitement de l'uranium 
seront inévitablement soumises aux conditions géomorphologiques et climatologiques 
qui prévaudront à long terme. Le compte rendu de l'une des réunions de travail traite 
des modalités d'application des principes de la géomorphologie à l'implantation, à 
fa conception, à la construction, au déclassement et à la remise en état des sites 
d'évacuation dans la perspective du confinement et de la stabilité à long terme des 
résidus. Les incidences potentielles susceptibles de survenir à long terme sont liées 
aux caractéristiques des résidus et à leur comportement après évacuation. Le compte 
rendu de l'autre réunion de travail présente les techniques de traitement du minerai 
d'uranium et du conditionnement des résidus dans le but d'identifier les améliorations
que l'on pourrait envisager en ce qui concerne ces caractéristiques.
