The OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) jointly established the Working Group on Uranium Extraction in 1978. A principal role of this Group was to collect and disseminate information related to mining and processing methods employed in the uranium industry. This Report has been prepared within the framework of the NEA/IAEA Working Group on Uranium Extraction using data provided by national authorities and by members of the Group and other experts and authoritative individuals in Member countries. Information has also been drawn from other OECD publications, in particular "Uranium Resources, Production and Demand, February 1982" and "World Uranium Potential: An International Evaluation", and the technical literature referenced at appropriate places in the report. The main aim of this Report is to provide the nuclear industry with a broad outline of current practice in ore processing plants in the major producing countries and a review of the more recent technological developments. The scope of the report is such that it will also provide for those not fully conversant with the extractive metallurgy of uranium, a useful and practical introduction to some of the main problems and challenges at present facing the uranium supply industry.
