THE FUEL FACTORY The ASEA-ATOM Fuel Division is responsible for fuel and core design nd development and fuel manufacturing. The Fuel Division employs about 400 people, half of whom are engineers. ASEA-ATOM was founded in 1969 but ASEA had been involved in fuel manufacturing since the beginning of the 1950s. The present fuel factory was taken into operation in 1971 and the conversion plant was added in 1975. Systems, processes and equipment are mainly of ASEA-ATOM design and the manufacturing process is highly automated and computerized. Buildings are spacious and cleanliness is of the highest standard. These conditions guarantee the fabrication of products of superior quality. The Fuel Division products include BWR and PWR fuel assemblies, Zircaloy BWR fuel channels, control rods, control rod drives and certain reactor components. The annual fuel production capacity is 400 tons of UO2 in the form of fuel assemblies. The ASEA-ATOM Quality Assurance Program ensures that products are designed, manufactured, inspected and delivered in accordance with the requirements of USNRC 10 CFR 50 Appendix B.
