INTRODUCTION

This book is prepared from papers presented at the Tritium symposium which was
held on August 28 to September 3, 1971 in the Frontier Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Symposium was co-sponsored by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV)
and the Western Environmental Research Laboratory of the U. S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA). Subsequently, this Laboratory has been renamed the
National Environmental Research Center-Las Vegas (NERC-LV).
The organizers of the Symposium hoped to encourage discussion between scientists
of various disciplines and, thus, eliminate a number of misconceptions in this field.
The organizers also hoped that the "proceedings" of the Symposium would be a
helpful document useful to both specialists and beginners in this field.
In preparing this book the Editors have tried to subject the papers to a rigorous
review. This process was the main reason for a reduction of the number of pages
from an estimated 1700 to the present size without a significant loss of content.
A careful observer will find several papers in the book which were not included in
the Symposium program. These papers cover areas which, in the judgment of the
Editors, were inadequately covered by the program. Unfortunately, the Editors
realized very late that deadlines regarding manuscripts would not be met in some
cases and, therefore, several presented papers are not included in this publication.
The Editors hope the book has not significantly suffered as a result of this
compromise.
