SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS Nuclear reactor accidents with catastrophic releases of radioactive materials are not just hypothetical events. They can and do in fact occur. This point was driven home by the Chernobyl disaster. Several hundreds of millions of people have been living under the radioactive cloud released at Chernobyl for weeks, and will be living with the radioactive fall-out in the soil for many decades. It is the purpose of this study to look into the possibilities for similar accidents in other reactor types. The study concentrates on reactors which are being operated in large numbers in the world: Pressurized and Boiling Water Reactors (taking into account national differences), Magnox and Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactors (AGR), Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (CANDU), as well as Graphite Moderated Boiling Water Reactors (RBMK, Chernobyl type) for comparison. Fast Breeder Reactors are discussed briefly, concentrating on the qualitative differences between breeders and thermal reactors. Thus, this study covers an important part of the hazards associated with nuclear energy used. Due to the limited time available, other problem areas are not discussed here.
