DEVELOPMENT OF THE MAAP CODE FOR ANALYSIS OF VVER PWRS

ABSTRACT

The VVER type Pressurized Water Reactors, designed in the former USSR and
operating in a number of Eastern European countries, have some significant design
differences when compared with "Western" PWRs. In the near future, a number of
safety studies of VVERs will be performed, and a tool is needed which can analyze
the plant response to a wide range of potential accidents in support of the safety
evaluations. This paper describes a program underway to develop a VVER version
of the Modular Accident Analysis Program, version 4, (MAAP4), covering both the
440 and 1000 VVER plant models. We discuss the overall structure of MAAP, the
modelling changes being performed, the applications foreseen for the new code,
and the current status of the development.
