ABSTRACT The Commission's Safety Goal Policy Statement in NUREG-0880, Rev. 1, directs the staff " … to collect available information on PRA studies and prepare a reference document that describes the current status of knowledge concerning the risk of plants licensed in the U.S. " The document discusses the purpose and content of a PRA and identifies the PRAs and other probabilistic studies performed to date. It then discusses the level of development and uncertainties associated with the various elements of PRA methodology as well as those generic insights derived from studies performed. Finally, potential uses of PRA in regulation are evaluated.
