Radionuclides in the Environment A symposium sponsored by the Division of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology of the American Chemical Society Humanitarian concern is not a new concept in the scientific community, but it acquires awesome proportions in relation to the responsible development and management of nuclear power. This unique form of energy has produced a double- edged result: blessings in the form of power, new research tools, and new knowledge and problems in the form of hazardous radionuclides and large quantities of radioactive waste. The need for an exchange of information on this problem was the basis for this symposium. Twenty-eight papers discuss and evaluate many of the properties and problems relating to radionuclides in our environment – namely mechanisms of release, absorption, uptake, retention, transport patterns, behavior, measurement and characterization, specific activity, and public health aspects. New methods and equipment for characterizing radioactive particles are discussed, and fallout from specific nuclear weapons tests is covered.
