From the publication:
About this book Changing attitudes in medicine have led to a shift from disease to preoccupation with health. Yet the establishment and acceptance of social medicine was an uphill struggle for those at the forefront of the discipline. Dr Alice Stewart's professional life experience is almost typical in this respect. Not only must she be counted amongst the pioneers as regards women combining traditional family roles with a career, but she also broke new ground in almost all her research activities. Innovation extended not only to subject matter but also to methodology and attitudes to team work. Her early realisation of the importance of multi-disciplinary inputs often ran counter to attitudes found in the medical profession in general, and her generosity in providing individuals with opportunities to show their mettle built devoted teams of co-workers. Her seminal contribution lies in the understanding of childhood cancers and the subsequent realisation of the continuous dose-response relationship between cancer and radiation exposure. This book brings together the many strands of a lifetime's hard work and shows that there is a coherent theme of innovation and achievement to be found in the life of this truly outstanding figure of the medical world of this century.
