HERITABLE ANOMALIES IN THE HIGH BACKGROUND RADIATION REGION IN KERALA, INDIA Results of a cross-sectional Epidemiologist study VT Padmanabhan,* Sugunan AP, Brahmaputhran CK, Pavithran K and Muralikrishna M. In India, there are an estimated half a million people in 40 regions with high background radiation emitted from the surface deposit of thorium bearing monazite. Highly concentrated deposits of monazite, ilmenite, rutile etc are found in the coastal districts of Ganjam in Orissa, Kanyakumari in Tamilnadu and Kollam in Kerala states. The Kerala strip was identified by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 1957 as an ideal setting for conducting long term studies to assess the genetic load from chronic exposure to low dose radiation. (1) Even four decades after this, animal data remains the main input for the estimate of radiation-induced genetic risk to man.
