From the publication:
Introduction As part of routine operations, the La Hague (France), Sellafield (UK) and Dounreay (UK) reprocessing plants discharge billions of litres of nuclear waste into the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish and North Seas. Carried by northerly currents, this radioactive contamination reaches coastal areas throughout Western Europe, the Nordic nations and the Arctic. Radioactivity accumulates in seafood and seaweed. It washes up on beaches, invades river estuaries, and leaves its toxic traces throughout the environment. France and Britain are quietly but massively increasing these discharges of radioactive waste into the sea and air. Yet, despite significant health threats posed by this contamination, the public receives little information about the discharges and plays a limited role in setting policy. Millions of men, women and children thus unwittingly serve as guinea pigs in what amounts to a secret nuclear experiment on a monumental scale.
