CHAPTER 1 – INTRODUCTION THE BACKGROUND TO THIS REPORT 1 British Nuclear Fuels plc (BNFL) provides a comprehensive range of nuclear fuel cycle services, i.e the purification and processing of uranium ore concentrates, the enrichment of uranium, the manufacture of uranium and plutonium based fuels, the reprocessing of irradiated fuel, and the conditioning and storage of nuclear materials and radioactive wastes. The Company also owns and operates two nuclear power stations of the Magnox type, one at the Chapel cross Works and the other, Calder Hall, on the Sellafield Site.
