PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION

Readers of previous editions of this book may be aware of the help I have received
from Tom Wheldon and Walter Watson. This has now matured into full co-authorship.
It is a pleasure to welcome them, not least for their valuable assistance in keeping
abreast of what continues to be a rapidly developing field.

There are a large number of changes in this new edition. Chapters 3, 12, 13 and
14 have been almost completely rewritten, and Chapters 8,10 and 11 modified
considerably. The other Chapters have all been changed in various minor ways.

Two problems faced by a book like this deserve mention. The first is the ICRP
recommendations, which have not yet been published but have been circulated in
draft form. Rather than further delay publication of this edition, we have included
the main recommendations of ICRP, in some cases (as in Chapter 10) alongside the
previous ( 1977) recommendations.

The second problem is what weight, if any, to give reports that have appeared but
have not yet been the subject of detailed scientific scrutiny; reports like this are
often called anecdotal. In general in this book we have only referred to work
published in scientific and medical journals. We do not mean to imply that
anecdotal reports are to be disregarded; simply that it is difficult and probably
premature to evaluate them before publication in the scientific literature.

As always, we have benefited from the comments and criticisms of colleagues.
For this edition we would particularly like to thank Keith Baverstock, Jim Patterson
and Barbara McGibbon.
