From the publication:
Sir, It is now well established that, for low doses of ionizing radiation of various sorts (Miller et.al. 1979, Elkind 1991), split doses can have a greater biological effect at low dose than the same overall dose given singly, It cannot be disputed that the target of these effects must be single cell nuclei and it is probable that it is the cellular repair and replication processes which are being perturbed in some way. Whatever the cause of such effects, it is an interesting consequence that similar effects to those found in in vitro studies using external irradiation by e.g. X-rays may be expected from sequentially decaying internal beta emitters and also alpha emitters under certain circumstances.
