From the publication:
INTRODUCTION The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which came into force in 1970, has 159 parties, more than any other international arms control treaty. However, from the very beginning the NPT has been a fragile document and remains so to this day. A product of the Cold War era and the political realities that existed at the time, the Treaty's goals were to prevent the further proliferation of nuclear weapons, whilst also encouraging the development of peaceful applications of atomic energy.
