FOREWORD This is the fifth booklet in the IAEA Safeguards Information Series. It is intended for the non-technical reader who is interested in the equipment and techniques used in verification measures for both nuclear material accountancy and containment and surveillance. The equipment and techniques described are chosen to give, as far as possible, a true picture of safeguards verification measures, both in routine use and under development. However, the continual evolution of newer and more effective verification measures means that periodic revision will be necessary. The material in this booklet will therefore be kept under constant review and updated versions will be produced at suitable intervals.
