Introduction

The Association of European Atomic Forums (Foratom) is a non-governmental
organisation with consultative status to the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Since it was founded in Paris in 1960 Foratom's membership of six has grown to
include eight of the nine member states of the European Economic Community -
Eire is the exception - and six non-Community members: these are Austria, Finland,
Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. The fourteen national Forums combined
in Foratom cover major power generation utilities, manufacturers of nuclear plant
and components, electronics companies, research establishments, finance houses
and engineering consultancies.

Foratom is broadly dedicated to the economic development of the peaceful uses of
nuclear energy in the belief that, if living standards of peoples throughout the world
are to be improved, or even maintained, nuclear energy must play an increasingly
important role in the energy policies of national governments.

To this end the Association sets out to identify, study and propose solutions to
problems which may affect the nuclear industry, seeks to present its views to
governments and supports all efforts to promote greater public understanding of
issues relating to the development, use and vital importance of nuclear energy.

This publication is intended as a guide to the aims and constitution of Foratom
and its members, and as a source of reference to the many diverse interests they
represent for all those concerned about or engaged in the peaceful uses of nuclear
energy and its development throughout the world.

The publication also demonstrates the overall expertise and capability of member
countries in the important field of nuclear energy and draws attention to the
invaluable and growing contribution made by nuclear technology in meeting
the energy needs of Western Europe.
