From the publication:
1. Science on Trial: the Health Effects of Low Level Radiation The Royal Society Committee on Depleted Uranium has been set up, as I understand it, to evaluate the health risks associated with the battlefield use by the military of the armourpiercing penetrators manufactured from this material. The question of the possible risks to the health of those who were exposed to it has now arrived at the door of this august body, the Royal Society. This is because it has sequentially passed through the stages of being addressed by several other less grand committees of experts whose job it is to know about these things, but who have all answered the question in a way that is not believable, given the real world data, what we might hesitantly label 'the facts'. The facts are that veterans of the recent Iraqi war have been suffering from a mysterious ailment called 'Gulf War Syndrome' which has all the indications of a consequence of chemical or radiation poisoning. The cancer rate in particular has sharply increased in this group of people suggesting exposure of the soldiers to a mutagen, or carcinogen. In addition, the population of Iraq in the areas where DU weapons were used seems to be suffering a similar fate, but in these territories also there have been reported increases in childhood cancer and malformation rates, again indication of a mutagen source.
