Forward The year was 2002. Last year was an Odyssey, but not one that could be cherished. The world had experienced the media spectade of watching (?)000 innocent Americans die as a consequence of two hijacked jets flying into the world trade centre in New York and another into the Pentagon building in Washington. It this wasn't enough, the world had to stand by as hundreds of thousands more perished as the United States and Britain blew up Afghanistan in the belief that a stray Arab called bin Laden, who may or may not have something to do with the events in New York and Washington, might just be holed up there. The millions of dead, injured, traumatised and starving Afghanis were not shown on CNN thanks to the discretion of Mr. Isaacson.
