Introduction Science and technology and the environment Science and technology are often faulted for bringing about undesirable environmental changes, and it is true that while they offer us the possibility to attain standards of living and life expectancies which are unprecedented, these tools also augment our ability to - wittingly or unwittingly - endanger, degrade and destroy the natural environment which gives us our sustenance. Nuclear energy and sustainable development The report of the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED), entitled Our Common Future, called for "sustainable development", which would meet "the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." In our effort to improve the standard of living of present generations, we should not act in such a way that future generations will inherit an impoverished and endangered world. The International Atomic Energy Agency reviewed its contribution to sustainable development in a report to the United Nations General Assembly in 1989 as a response to part of the WCED report. The present report, requested by the General Conference of the IAEA (under Resolution GC(XXXV/554)) for transmission to the Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also focuses on the contributions which nuclear energy makes to sustainable development, as well as problems linked to its use.
