From the publication:
INTRODUCTION After a period of reorganization and a reorientation towards the market, the Netherlands Energy Research Foundation has now settled in a new, clearer position in the field of technological research. This resulted, for the first time since 1988, in a positive result amounting to Dfl 1.4 million net in 1990. Revenue rose to some Dfl135 million, of which Dfl57 million was in general grants from the Dutch government. The desire to cut costs and the decisiveness in obtaining new commissions pulled the ECN out of the red in 1990. ECN's new efficient and market oriented approach is geared towards obtaining maximum returns from its activities, focused at making energy serviceable to society. ECN's position in the existing order of technological research was further defined last year, partly by the final formulation of tasks by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and partly through agreements with TNO. In ECN's own programme strategy, main outlines were established for the energy research in the first half of the 1990s. The ECN research programme will concentrate on three key points: - The development of clean conversion technologies for the use of fossil fuels; - The development of affordable technology for the exploitation of renewable energy sources; - Increasing the safety of nuclear power stations. These three key points are clearly visible in both long- and short-term ECN research.
