ENERGY AND SUSTAINABILITY

At the end of the 1980s the Brundtland Committee introduced 'sustainability' as
the guide-line for economic development. Because energy is an important factor
in economic development, the need to attain sustainability holds in particular for
the energy supply system. The Netherlands Energy Research Foundation ECN has
adopted the pursuit of sustainable energy supply as the core of all of its activities.
The sustainable energy supply system of the future has to comply with stringent
requirements: adequate in quantity, reliable, affordable, safe and clean. The gap
between the present energy economy and sustainability however is still very wide.
With its research programmes, ECN endeavours to contribute to the bridging of
this gap. Its basic assumption is that this will only be possible with a well-balanced
mix of nuclear energy, energy from fossil fuels and from renewable energy sources.
New energy technologies will need to be developed and existing energy
technologies combined. Efficient use of energy is a key issue: to provide sufficient
energy with the lowest possible use of primary energy materials and the smallest
possible emissions of noxious by-products.
