From the publication:
The Netherlands Energy Research Foundation ECN, situated in the dunes of North Holland near the village of Petten, is the leading centre for energy research and development in the Netherlands. ECN develops technologies for a safe, clean and efficient energy supply. The ECN units work on renewable energy sources (solar, wind and biomass), nuclear energy, energy from fossil fuels, policy studies, radiation technology and the rational use of energy and materials. At the end of 1993 the number of permanent staff employed was 882. When selecting R&D topics of national or international importance ECN takes into account questions from the Dutch and European authorities, industry and society. In recent years ECN has also increasingly committed itself to obtaining a sustainable energy supply system. Although there is no blueprint of such a system, it is obvious that research, development and demonstration are necessary to create the basis for a sustainable development. Thus in 1993 ECN has put a stronger emphasis on sustainable development in its research programme and research strategy. ECN consequently considers it essential to establish closer links with industry. Only a broad collaborative development will create the support that is needed for a gradual implementation of sustainable technologies in the energy supply system.
